A new $2 billion athletic facility for Fayette County will include the first soccer field in the region, with the goal of turning the stadium into a destination for students, faculty and staff.
The $1.4 billion facility, called The Field, will be located in Fayette’s downtown area.
The facility will feature indoor and outdoor fields, a practice and fitness center, a gym, a dining hall and locker rooms.
The fields will be on private property and be open to the public for two years, according to a release from the Fayette Center for Development.
The soccer field is expected to open in 2018, the release said.
“Fayetteville has the ability to attract the best talent to Fayette, but we want to build a soccer facility that will provide opportunities for everyone in our community,” Fayette Central Mayor Mark W. Woodard said in a statement.
“Our community has an incredible sports history, and we’re excited to join the ranks of other universities and cities who are offering this facility.”
The Fayette City Council will hold a special session to consider the project Wednesday.
The council is expected in a special meeting on Friday to decide on the project.
Fayette Central is located in the central business district and will be the second soccer field to be built in the city.
The field is located just east of the downtown Fayette Street Station, a downtown park that opened in 2014 and includes a water park, a playground, a volleyball court and a soccer practice facility.
