The dream of earning a college education without going back to school is no longer a reality.
But a new generation of students is taking the plunge to pursue a career in technology.
While it might not sound glamorous, there are many advantages to being an entrepreneur and getting a bachelor’s degree, according to the National Association of Business Colleges.
“It’s a really good place to start your career,” said Ryan Kohn, an associate professor of marketing at Virginia International University.
“If you’re in the right city, you’re not going to lose your job, you have a good position, and you have the skills to move into a new area.
It’s a great place to be.”
The idea of earning your college degree, however, has been around since the 1970s.
And it remains popular among a younger generation of people, who are more interested in the tech world than their parents were, said Kohn.
“A lot of people have heard the buzzwords like ‘tech unicorn,’ and they think they can take a leap of faith into something that’s so intangible,” said Kaela Siegel, an assistant professor of management at Virginia.
“But the truth is, a college grad is a lot harder to break into the startup world than an undergrad, because a lot of the skills that a college graduate has aren’t transferable, and they’re hard to transfer to the startup scene.”
But Siegel said the fact that a grad can also get into the tech scene is a benefit, especially when you’re looking for a job that will allow you to support yourself during your college years.
“I think a lot more people are starting their careers with some kind of education, and I think a college diploma gives you a leg up in that regard,” Siegel added.
If you want to get in on the college game, Kohn said it can be challenging to find a job, but he said it is worth it.
“If you’ve been doing this for a while, you might want to make a conscious effort to take on something as a part-time job,” Kohn added.
“It can be a great career choice.
A college degree is definitely a way to make it a viable option for the person.”
Kohn said the biggest downside to the college degree idea is that it can make you less prepared for the job market, which could affect your ability to land a job.
“In order to make sure that you can actually find a full-time gig, you really have to be in the know about what the market is going to be,” Kaelan said.
“College is really great for that.
The ability to be an independent thinker and a marketer is really valuable.”
Kaelan, Siegel and Kohn are part of a growing number of graduates from Virginia Tech and Northeastern University who are taking the leap to become entrepreneurs.
These students are taking on more and more of the responsibilities of running a business, which has the potential to be a rewarding career, said Siegel.
“You’re going to need to be more of an innovator,” she added.
“College is an amazing career that offers many benefits,” said Saffron.
“For example, you can go back to grad schools, go to grad programs, go back into a career that you’ve always wanted, which can be very exciting.
And if you want a real opportunity to make some money, you need to go to school.”
But for students like Saffran, she has seen the downside of the college experience.
“When you think about it, it’s a huge waste of time.
You’re wasting your time doing all this work,” she said.”
Most people are going to graduate, and that’s great, but I don’t want to go back,” she continued.
“I just want to finish my education.
That’s all I want.
So that’s what I want to do.”
