NEW YORK (AP) – The university where one of the students who was killed in a shooting at the University of Virginia last month shared his college Twitter account to share photos of his school.
Now, the university is developing a new social media tool to help students share their own college stories, including photos and video.
The tool is being called “Instapaper.”
“We’re not going to use any kind of traditional publishing system, we’re not publishing anything, but we are providing a platform for people to share their college stories,” University of Tennessee President John Currie said at the university’s graduation in Chattanooga.
The university says it has no plans to use social media as a revenue stream.
It’s been the tool of choice for a number of students who want to share pictures of their college experience.
The app lets students upload and share a picture or video and then add the hashtag #instapaper to the post, and it allows the students to follow the person and comment on their own post.
They can also create a tag to show the person’s last name and other information.
Students have been using the tool for about a week, and Currie says he has seen a lot of interest from students who don’t want to use a traditional publishing platform.
The University of Alabama at Birmingham has created a similar app, which was named “Pillow Notes” in honor of the school’s graduation.
The news of the app comes on the heels of a shooting on campus in which a man, identified as Dylann Roof, killed nine people and injured 17 others, including the police officer who fatally shot him.
The U.S. Justice Department is investigating.
